What are the reasons for such a great and lasting development, over the last forty years, of photography devoted not to the natural but to the man-made landscape? Why the city, and the outskirts in particular? Perhaps simply because a continuity between history and the present that we felt to be coherent was disappearing from a landscape undergoing massive and sudden change, while at the same time the bond with nature was being lost; and so photographers, having lost their roots, tried (and still try) to imagine its destiny. The city, with its complexity and its unstoppable growth, has made it possible to take the measure of this great phenomenon.
