Palermo in the photographs of Sandro Scalia: the exhibition for “Incursioni contemporanee” at Villa Zito.
This is the second appointment of Incursioni contemporanee, the series – organised in collaboration with the City of Palermo, the Sicilian Region and Visiva, and part of the Palermo Italian Capital of Culture 2018 programme – devoted to the cross-fertilisation between the painting collections of the Fondazione Sicilia and contemporary languages. Daniele Franzella opened the series with the evocative installations of the exhibition “Gloria”. Now, entering into dialogue with the Fondazione Sicilia’s permanent painting collection will be the photographs of Sandro Scalia, another leading name in contemporary art, and not only Sicilian art. On Friday 6 July at 6 pm, Villa Zito will host the opening of Belvedere: “It is first and foremost a reflection on landscape: the landscape of our own time and that of memory, both historical and iconographic. Always attentive to investigating the formal and anthropic values of the landscape, Sandro Scalia develops a strategy of gazes as complex as it is understated: often frontal framing, as if to declare the objective neutrality of the visual approach,” says the curator, Sergio Troisi, “a corresponding (and apparent) simplicity of the compositional planes, a way of constructing the image that tends to distil, within the perceptual datum the photograph carries with it, every possible narrative hierarchy and every dramatic emphasis”. Incursioni contemporanee is a multi-voiced dialogue that will also include the reflections of two other highly important artists, Fulvio Di Piazza and Croce Taravella. “Photography is undoubtedly one of the quintessential means of expression of the contemporary world,” says the president of the Fondazione Sicilia, Raffaele Bonsignore, “and in the case of Sandro Scalia it becomes a work of art in dialogue with our permanent collection. I am sure that this exchange will give rise to reflections and emotions”. [source: PALERMOTODAY]
